#697 - Out of Your League

I'm very tired. I have nothing to say. Since this keeps happening, I've hired an Author Blog Monkey to write my comments for me. Take it away, Blog Monkey!

"Reka and Tuna are locked in combat. For all that is fighting, Reka is moving surprisingly slowly, and the taller Tuna is trying to rouse her by stepping back, touching her left foot with the toe of his right, first one foot, then the other. She’s breathing steadily through her nose, but only once every four or five breaths. Tuna has been warned not to hurt her, but she’s not backing down. Reka wears dark sunglasses, and from beneath them, her dark eyes are wide, but blank. She does not seem to hear what Tuna says. She does not."

Wow! Outstandingly terrible! We'll keep you around, Blog Monkey.

-75% what? Speed? Chance of being mortally wounded? Discount on gas purchases?

Oh, no! She's reduced the dialogue length! And the brightness level! And the team's torsos!

(Author comment)
And plot cohesion from human input!

20,000 leagues... Is that distance, so is this a teleport spell? Or are we looking forward to one of the longest blitzball tournament series ever?

Wait, no. Not blitzball. The leagues down here are Card Game leagues.

This might take a while...

Based on the visual effect, this is some gravija like dark magic that takes away 75% of your HP. 20,000 leagues is a very long distance and originally was the length of an undersea voyage, but it could refer here to an impossibly deep ocean they are filling the pressure of. Similar spells are called "black hole" after all.

Sucks when you find out that the magic letting you breathe and survive the crushing pressure of the ocean you are in is in your opponent's hands, and she can turn it off or reverse it simply by stopping spending mp on it.

They're breathing from the Scuba suit tech! If she was controlling it she'd just do that immediately. lol

percentage based damage, meaning that it would be significant but non fatal to any party member it hit. Combined with an auto-heal that means this is a fight you're not supposed to win the traditional way. I feel like I'm going through the cyborg rat fight all over again, trying to predict the actual in game mechanics...

Maybe Jim just sucks at games

She can heal and cast on the same turn!? Looks like the only way to win this fight is with... true love's kiss?

Kiss her Reka! Kiss her good!

Kiss also just heals hp

Kiss may heal HP, but Pirate's Kiss steals G!

Remember in original RPG World when there was a big joke about Diane kissing Cherry and Eikre was going wild. It's so funny how fetishized girl on girl stuff was in the early 00's. Now lesbianism is so common between The Owl House, Steven Universe, and society as a whole it seems so silly to get excited that a girl might kiss another girl.

Something I find interesting is that specifically girl + girl relationships are becoming normalized (see shows you mentioned). Possibly because it can seem more expressive, but male + male relationships are not normalized in media at all. Even those that are hinted at are still often portrayed as comical (see cops in gravity falls).

Don't know a good way around it, but it seems only female gay relationships are shown. Either way, steps are steps.

Yeah, it's definitely small steps. There's a gay relationship in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (fantastic), and... oh man, that may be the only one I can think of, and it's not exactly front and center. But I bet in the next twenty years it'll become far more normalized. Right now it's just lots of characters have gay dads.

Alternative perspective: (not aiming for an argument, just an explanation of how I see it)

The bounds for what is acceptable forms of non-romantic female-female physical affection may have shifted. Hugs and kisses (excluding lip-to-lip) are now able to be used in aromantic relationships between females. (I see it possibly as an extension of the mother/child affection being overlayed onto friendships, in a healthy way) (side note: Depending on the character, it may even be seen as normal for some of this in their non-romantic male-female relations. See Grace from the El Goonish Shive comic as an example of non-romantic, highly physical affection character)

On the other hand, the line for what's considered 'romantic' when a man is the initiator is a bit more conservative. (Regardless of who his partner is) These days, all kissing, and most hugging seems to be preserved for a romantic relationship. (Probably for good reason; the unwanted/harassment potential if men were less cautious with their aromantic affection probably isn't a can of worms our society wants to open.) On the other hand, males do need healthy physical affection from other males. This is a bit of a 'knives edge' problem though, as what's healthy in one context is also too violent/forceful in a slightly different context. Broadcasting/entertainment has tended to play this a bit cautiously, to prevent backlash.

With the above as a basis, PDA between females (romantic or not) is something much simpler to show than PDA between men. Media's portrayal of relationships is a reflection of that.

I'm not a proponent of same sex romances, but I do think the relaxing of the physical boundaries for platonic relationships can be healthy.

Maybe they'll run into an eccentric submarine captain after this attack that will help them.
Cause they could use all the help they can get.
