Hidy ho! Hope you all had an excellent Thanksgiving! Well, those of you in America, I guess. Even then it's hard to wish you well on a celebration of the genocide of an entire peoples, but you KNOW WHAT. SOMETIMES WE JUST WANNA EAT TURKEY AND NOT FEEL BAD ABOUT THINGS.
Poor Atari. I forget not everyone has everything about this comic stashed in their head. The script called for her to clasp her Spirit Bead and Atari had no idea what that was. He thought it was the orb at the end of Tuna's staff, so Cherry was holding onto the end of the staff. Atari had to make last minute changes. But he was quick! Boy can he art fast.
I'm going to really hate this page whenever I try to format for some kind of compilation book or something. Longpage is long.
(Did you guys know Longcat died this year? That's sad. But he (she?) was like 20 or something.)
The original title for this page was "The Important Thing is You Tried", which honestly worked fine, but I wanted to see if I could come up with something funny in less than 3 minutes. Sometimes the titles just write themselves.
I'm sleepy. I woke up at 5:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. I think I'ma take a nap. Then get tacos.
On the comic:
This summon is one of the few that has been successful in pulling something summon worthy, and it's a perfect metaphor for Cherry's character arc so far.
She's had it rough. Been fired up for hero frequently, but each time she gets close... look at pages 69-72. More recently, she doesn't get a weapon upgrade in 635 because they don't have her weapon type. Harpoon gun vs crossbows; everyone knows that's a whole different skill group. I mean, look at all the subclasses of swords and who is allowed to use them. ;)
At least she's getting a lot of time with her desired goal without having to deal with competition from Reka, and Diane temporarily it if the picture.
I hope she's persistent in rising from adversity like the Phoenix is, and that eventually she will shine bright in success as a beacon of hope for others. - Especially given it is likely going to require something subtle and unintentional for hero to understand and respond to what she's desperately trying to portray. (At minimum, maybe being back with the full group and realizing how much she's brought along will help her see how special she is to him)
On the comment:
Why would you call this holiday a 'celebration of the genocide of an entire peoples'? The traditional Thanksgiving that is historically remembered is the story of a people that had survived their previous harsh winter, with rations limited to 5 kernels of corn, and then celebrating the successful harvest along with the last surviving member of a tribe that had lived there, who taught them how to thrive in the land, along with the neighboring tribe that had adopted that last surviving member. All celebrating together in thanks for a successful cooperation between them.
Even if you account for future interactions between other representatives of the respective cultures that happened later on, that's not what this day represents.
I also refuse to refer to the day as 'Turkey day', as that misses the entire angle of 'giving thanks'. A day for that purpose along with the celebration of a successful harvest has been part of human history around the globe, and long preceeds the Plymoth pilgrim/Squanto/Massasoit celebration.
I'd say if you can't celebrate the day because of other settler/Indian interactions in future years, feel free to skip that day. But if you do so, pick another to be thankful on. There's so much to be thankful for, from having air to breathe and food to eat; the comic having the reach of the internet, (both on the producer/audience end, and through time) and the ability to afford regular access to it; the oddness of H2O that keeps the frozen water from sinking, and the sun that gives energy to all the plants of the Earth. (May your list be long when you think through it)
A very well thought out and surprisingly accurate comment! It makes me happy to see that some of the things I try to work in come through. 😃
As for the author note, I hate to shrug it off as "just a joke", but honestly it was my jaded leftist millennial humor slipping through. I do have lots I'm thankful for, which is only highlighted more by the things I've lost. And I'm certainly thankful for my ability to run this comic and have readers that enjoy it! 😁
Speaking of, I saw your pledge increase! 😭 Thank you so much! Atari and I definitely appreciate your support. Our patrons make it much, much easier to continue the comic.
Thanks for the comment, and thanks again for the pledge! And by the way, you should totally join us on Discord. You get a special Patron color and everything 😉
Also I was sitting here trying to figure out how to pronounce your name or how on earth you remember it, then realized it's bounty hunter backwards. Nice 😎👌
It started from my love of the original Star Wars trilogy, legends cannon, and the lore/mystique of the hunters. Since then, I've found it fits me in other ways. - but that's not something I can fit into my lunch break.
I may share that, and a pronunciation guide in discord sometime.
Don't worry, dude. Everyone else thought your "leftist millennial humor" was fine and funny. And turkey day is based on genocide, no matter how badly people want to pretend that part didn't matter/happen. Don't be afraid to speak your opinions, politics, or views, man. You don't have to be all things to all people.
But let's not turn your comment section into a political debate 😬
"Phoenix Drown" <- this is the content I come here for hahaha
I somehow missed the r in the title. Thanks for pointing that out! I would have completely missed it otherwise. Love the play on words! ^_^

I have no desire to have a political debate in the comments. There's enough of that in reddit to fill anyone's desire. (Including the ongoing election investigations, and with both parties thinking the other is trying to steal it)
On the other side of things, Thanksgiving is a holiday I feel strongly about, and I don't like it when clear intents are distorted or misrepresented through history. - I am sorrowful for what happened between the natives and immigrants in future generations, but don't want that to taint the triumph represented in the original.
Dude...you should learn to not demand others value what you do.
Just because thanksgiving is a holiday you feel strongly about doesn't mean it's above criticism, or that its history gets to be whitewashed, or that what you decide is its definitive value is what others have to define it by as well.
Live and let live, my friend. Have a tougher skin when you're on the internet. People think differently than you; that's okay. Just because someone criticizes something or others think less of something you like doesn't mean it has less value in your eyes.
But demanding that others respect what you do is...well you know what that is.
Anyway. Happy Other-Turkey day (the one coming up).
Hi, I saw a video you were involved in on YouTube. It was a Super Mario RPG grind to try to collect as few coins as possible. Well done! I know that had to be grueling, but I enjoyed the story and learned some new things.
Hey-heyy! Excellent! Glad to have you! Honestly that was a hella fun challenge and gave me an even greater appreciation for already one of my favorite games!
I'll have to remember to look that up sometime. I enjoy watching gameplay challenges, and had a lot of time on that game when I was younger. I've called it one of the best games for introducing a gamer to RPGs. :)
That is a Greek level of torturous afterlife. Prometheus is just looking at that Phoenix and then appreciating that vulture only picks out his liver once a day.
At first I was wondering, "What pocket?" in the 2nd panel and looking at the staff and then figured, "Oh, the 'breast pocket'! ;) "
Then I got to the author's commentary and realized why panel 2 came out that way.
Like the others have said, spot-on with the joke and the title!
Oh and Google says Longcat died at age 18. And I only just now looked it up when I got the news from you so no, I didn't know. Thanks for sharing!
Cherry: So the enchantment is sort of a radius that you can step out of. So you guys are kinda like Jar Jar Binks and his cities in that one mo...
Tuna: Don't make me end you.
It seems that summons don't get the enchantment. So the phoenix gets numerous quick deaths compared to most other stuff which would drown. Very slowly. Even trade?
Also: Thanksgiving isn't celebrating genocide. Its about celebrating avoiding a disaster (kinda like how The Menorah works) with the disaster being total starvation and not knowing how to grow fish trees. And celebrating how one group helped another group (kinda like Octoberfest). And its a generic holiday about celebrating feasts and booze (also kinda like Octoberfest).
I am fairly sure that the phoenix isn't drowning, despite the comic name. It is made of fire, and surrounded by water (hence panel 5) and that's what's killing it. I think the enchantment would work fine to keep something like an emo kid or an intern breathing just as long as they weren't made of magnesium or something.
As to the prequels, I kinda love watching them because they're terrible, but consistent. Everything from "Spinning, that's a good trick," to "from my point of view the Jedi are evil," is the same level of stupid shlock that it is fun to watch. It makes me realize that Star Wars is terrible, which is kind of a shame. I feel like the new trilogy is going to have the same vibe in a decade or so, where people laugh at the stupid sith knife or "Somehow, Palpatine has returned" with the same level of glee as "You underestimate my power!"

However, also remember that not all your readers are "jaded millennial leftists", and this is probably a lousy place for a serious discussion. ;)

Someone in the comments found a way to get the count even lower as well.
Then I got to the author's commentary and realized why panel 2 came out that way.

(Actually, the older I get and especially after the new set of movies, I find myself enjoying the prequels more and more.)
