So I’ve been playing the FF7 Remake and it is perfect. I’m honestly only 12 hours in right now but I’m loving every minute of it and loving everything they’ve done incorporating the old elements with the new. I thought I wouldn’t like the active combat so much, but it’s fun and creative. The controls are a little clunky and Barret is damn near USELESS?? Yeah he can spend 30 seconds shooting a distant target and trying to build his ATB gauge, OR, I can have Cloud take 3 swipes at an enemy and then just cast Thunder on it?? Like fuck, Barret.
Also I pulled a back muscle shoveling wet ash out of my fire pit, so I’ve been hobbling around like an old man. Why does that matter? It doesn’t! But what else am I supposed to write here? COMMENTARY about the COMIC or something? Ha!
I can't help but think Shiro and Perry are getting a Pyrrhic victory as they'll probably be the ones to have to clean all that mess up. Probably will take them until the end of the game to finish. ;)
Back injuries are a great excuse to just lay around playing video games! ;)
Check out the old commentary on the original RPG World it's pretty much wall to wall talk about all the hot video games of 2002. You can see them talk about Smash Bros Melee and Wind Waker and Final Fantasies. This commentary is so on brand.
I found the best use for Barret was slotting Lightning+Elemental into his weapon. Ranged shots guaranteed to always hit for the weakpoint (You know, if it was lightning) made fights simpler, especially when enemies were out of range. Looking at you, Air Buster. >.>
Hmm, I really don't recall anything like that. My first Blue was Synergy I think. And dang, I've been so thorough and checking every little place I can find.
"You want me to go this way? Yeah, but first I want to check over there."
Occasionally they will let you go a bit, but I'm sure I've annoyed the party members.
And I've still missed some things. A chest or 2 at least, that I saw after a one way drop, and at least 2 achievement opportunities. - Fortunately it doesn't look like any of it was a materia/weapon. (Probably potions/ethers) I'm just hoping I don't miss any of the music disks.
Completionist hint: (small spoiler) have steal equipped when in the train area. - You will want to use it on the boss.
Yay! The interns survived! And get their much welcome level up!
Thank you for your thoughts on the remake. :) I'm a bit ahead of you, and I've enjoyed this retelling of the story, so far. - And they haven't disappointed with the materia system.
Barret is kinda built to be a tank, but doesn't seem to do that much damage. That said, his shots are fast, so even though the numbers may look small, they add up. Additionally there are enough encounters later that can be awkward for melee, so its nice to have a ranged character arround.
The game does have its downsides though. The side quests feel a little forced, thin, and as padding. There's a fair amount of long thin running areas without any battles, leading to some frustration on a few occasions I was looking for a fight. (Weapon skills, or occasionally feeling slightly underleveled)
There is some awkwardness to some of the background textures, (Some more cringey than others) and a few places where the story goes out of its way to feel forced. (Almost certainly intentionally)
Still, the positive far outweighs those negatives. I just need to see how they stick the landing. :)

Hopefully the pain will vanish quickly. - It's... not fun to have to live with.
Good to see Shiro and Perry are still alive.
It should have been the first blue materia you saw. Probably had a slight conversation about it being out of reach.
It's definitely a 'nice to have', but not required.
