Classic indeed.

Pretty sweet drop for a door.

It's only an average drop for a grandfather clock though.

I remember, years ago, my friend told me to interact with every clock in FF6 to get Elixirs. Later on, he was helping me with the final boss and noticed I was loaded up on Elixirs. He asked where I'd gotten them and I reminded him about the clocks. His eyes grew wide and he said, "Dude! How many clocks did you touch!?"

That's wild! I hadn't heard of that. Granted, my final fantasy journey started at FF7

Heh, sounds like we are near opposites, as my Final Fantasy experience is pre-Final Fantasy VII. I tried Final Fantasy VII and didn't care for it. There were some extenuating circumstances, so I'm not going to call it a bad game by any stretch... but even now, I'm not sure if it is a game for me.

If you have any capacity to enjoy JRPG's from the NES/SNES-era, I recommend trying at least some of the earlier Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy VI is my favorite. Oh, and if you do try them, ask someone you trust for recommendations with explanations.

Not just in terms of which games in the series, but which versions of which games. As for the "explanation" part, I just discovered I'm an oddball yet again. For example, I'm an oddball because not only do I not hate the remake of the original Final Fantasy found in Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls for the GBA, but if someone is only ever going to play a single version of Final Fantasy, that's the version I'd recommend unless they really love "NES hard" games.

I did play FFVI til about the halfway point and lost interest. I just couldn't quite get into it. That being said, that was after I'd played VII - XII

Heh, well you made it further in FFVI than I made it in FFVII. Yeah, if these kinds of games aren't your thing, they aren't your thing.

Kudos to Atari for both remembering the bubble effects and still going through with them (though I imagine by the end of this arc he'll be happy to not have to do them anymore).

Cherry is just upset that, as a Thief, all her good damage abilities cost MP (and therefore must be hoarded and never used until an actual boss battle instead of just a mini-boss like here).

Oooh, what a page. Love how there is no life experience to gain from doors. Love that cutout of Hero, but....FU- got cutoff! Whatever could she have been trying to say!?

On another note, since y’all be experts, should I play X or XII first, if either at all?

X is my second favorite FF by far. Definite recommend. I have next to no affection for 12, it did absolutely nothing for me. X still gives me feels to this day and I've considered a replay now that the remaster has been out.

X-2 on the other hand, is... Like a weird fanfiction

I've played and enjoyed both. A lot of people complain that XII "plays itself" because it's not quite turn based, and so your allies work on how you program them. So you can set them so that if any of the party members get to less than 30% HP they automatically heal, and if they encounter an enemy weak to cold they cast ICE 2, and so on. It's a really different experience from all the other Final Fantasies which I found to be a lot of fun, but many players didn't care for. Otherwise the story and characters are excellent, with the exception of the main character who is completely boring.
Conversely in FFX, you've got the best execution of a traditional Final Fantasy experience. The combat is a lot of fun, being the only FF game I can think of that lets you switch your party Mid battle. Similarly the leveling system is really good using a Sphere system that is very similar to Path of Exile, if you've played that, and is just incredibly fun to level up in. Conversely the story in FFX is terrible, and where the main character is boring in FFXII he's annoying as hell in this one.
So in short both are good for different reasons. I'd probably go for FFX, if I had to pick one,but I'm like 55%/45% on the decision.
EDIT: Disclaimer for FFXII: Some of the big optional boss fights take literally hours if you play them when you first unlock them. When I played the game I'd start the boss fight, then I'd go to work in the middle of it. Since the game plays itself I'd have won by the time I got home from work. That's not quite a glowing endorsement, but again, those fights are optional. I never beat Ruby or Emerald Weapon either.

Aside from a few scenes (HAAAA HA HA HA HA HA) I thought Tidus was a great character, and Yuna's struggle between her life and her duty to be so moving. The relationships between the characters are REAL and you can FEEL the bond slowly forming between them.

Alternately, XII is... Some political strife? Meh.

1. Seymour is the worst. That's a fact.
2. The ending is dumb as hell, and I won't elaborate on that our of respect for R.C.D.
3. You may like Tidus, but FFXII's Balthier teaches us what Han Solo would be like if Chewbacca was a playboy bunny instead of a Wookiee.

FFXII is, I'll admit, some political strife, but I enjoyed it.

Balthier is so standard suave British guy you've read in every girl's fanfiction though! He's so generic!

They're all generic in fact. Their colors are all brown and muted, and I can barely remember any of their names. Like you said, the character you play as is boring af. He's just kind of there while everyone leads the story.

XD alright, good response. They’re cheap, I’ll eventually play both and probably agree with every statement from both parties XD. But the teammate AI in 12 sounds like xenoblade a little, and that’s easy enough to get over. Of course, this is 6 years earlier...ya gotta get behind Doomdragon’s passion for those interactions though. X will probably be first....should it ever be reached past the backlog of RPGs that all need to be played!

...guys, I think we all have an RPG problem.

We all have a bit of an RPG problem, although I haven't touched them recently. I never played FF13, 15, or even other franchises like the recent Octopath Traveler. I wonder what changed. Anyway, I think we're arguing over a pretty narrow element in that we agree that FFX is the better game. I just think that XII is also good. It's just super weird compared to every other FF.
You guys pumped for the FFVII remake, or are you on camp shameless cash grab?

I've been waiting for it for 20 years, I bought a PS4 for it, I have the deluxe version being delivered to my house the day it comes out, and I'm taking a week off work when it drops.

Everything about it looks perfect and I am r e a d y

That was me for Octopath Traveler. I would be ecstatic for the remake, which has to be more than a cash grab (I mean, look at that fine hunk o man, Barret! That gun is SCULPTED!) but...R.C.D. Lacks the PS4... Live for me, guys! Play that long awaited work with passion for all of those who can’t!

I thought the gambit system (party programming) in FF12 was a brilliant concept that was poorly executed. FF13 had the opportunity to expand on with its "paradigm shifts", but didn't and instead basically played itself.

FF10's battle system was poetry, though; the meter at the top that shows turn order and dynamically updates is WAY superior to ATB gauges, and I'm kinda sad it didn't make it into their later games.

FF13 would have had wonderful combat if it'd used FF10's turn system instead of active time battle, or if the player had had the opportunity to 'gambit' the AI of the party members 2 and 3 (or preferably both). As it was on release, the combat is literally too fast to make use of commands: you either use auto-battle or you lose, and that stinks. ...The plot wasn't great either; everyone except Vanille and Fang had very little common ground.

Cherry, you're not some Isekai character. This is the world you live in. You should know this is how the world works. You might ask why this would make sense, but again, this is how the world works.
